Post transplant Day 1

It’s been the best possible day here at the hospital because we have been bored, bored, bored. Yeah for boredom! Karl’s vitals are all normal and his blood counts have not yet begun to drop. He had some dexamethasone via iv early this morning and then the regular cocktails of lovenox, acyclovir, allopurinol and an anti-fungal med whose name I don’t know. Added to that was a couple of Golden Nuggets (Zofran) for nausea and senokat for constipation. The sum total of all the drugs in was nothing coming out but normal fluids. That’s the kind of math we like...new math I guess. The only side effect so far is a little of the burnt mouth feeling, which he is so far managing with a saline rinse. We are hoping for a boring weekend because we know to expect some negatives next week as his blood levels drop.

Chemo First off, Karl noticed that I have been spelling Myeloma incorrectly. I'm not sure if I can change the name of the blog post without starting from scratch. If any reader knows how, please let me know! Back to the story. Dr. Manning told Karl that all test results supported Dr. Vasanthan's diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. MM can be either stage 1, 2, or 3. The patient's stage depends upon the level of progression of the cancer. If you want more info, check out Mutliple Myeloma Canada because they know far more than        me. He wasn't able to tell us Karl's stage at that point because they were still waiting on the results of the bone marrow biopsy and some of the blood work. Some blood also went to the Mayo clinic for DNA testing. However, he knew Karl wasn't stage 3 because he didn't have elevated calcium in his blood or kidney damage. Happy Birthday Bone Marrow!

It’s hard to believe that it has been a year, but it has! Karl’s new bone marrow and immune system is a year old today. All in all it has been a good year. Karl takes chemo in pill form (Revlemid) every day, he gives himself an injection of blood thinner (Lovenox) every day, and he still has a bone builder (Zometa) via iv every month, but gradually all of the other meds have been stopped. As each drug was taken away its side effects also vamoosed, albeit slowly. Unfortunately the three remaining drugs often leave Karl tired, sore, achy, and with some digestive and bowel issues. But when you consider the alternatives,... At the 100 day mark Karl was told he had a very good partial response to the bone marrow transplant. His myeloma markers were still visible, but they had dropped considerably. All of his other blood and kidney markers were within the normal range. Basically that’s still where he is. We know that currently there is no cure for Multiple Myeloma, but for Karl right now...
