Positives with Hiccups
Today is T + 13. When I wrote last we were concerned about an echocardiogram that was ordered to ensure that the staph bacteria wasn't growing on his heart valves. It wasn't! All good. The Pip/Taz antibiotic was discontinued. Karl is still on the other antibiotic, and will be for at least 10 or more days. Today his liver enzymes were up, and it is thought that might be because of a reaction between the antibiotic and the Parkinson's medication he takes. The Parkinson's medication will be held to see if the liver enzyme thing resolves itself.
Karl hasn't needed any more platelets, but he is still getting phosphates (via iv), potassium (via iv), and calcium (via a pill). Up until this morning he was also getting iv fluids to ensure that he wouldn't get dehydrated. That was stopped on the condition that he make sure he drinks at least a liter of water a day. He is eating and drinking a little, but not enough. He is consciously trying to increase both, but it hurts his mouth going in and the other end coming out, so...
The other thing that is being watched carefully is the composition of his blood. While he hasn't needed platelets since last Sunday, they are still below the level they look for in order to be released from hospital. His hemoglobin is also low, but holding fairly steady and he hasn't had to have a transfusion. The final blood related issue is white blood cells. Those were the ones that were wiped out with the chemo. They are steadily growing from the stem cells that were injected, and yesterday his neutrophils were 1.14. Unfortunately today the neutrophils dropped to 0.9, so he was given Neupogen again to boost growth.
So... lots of positives with some hiccups. Fingers crossed that the positives continue and the hiccups go away!
